Why Am I (Still) Doing This?

We decided to self-isolate starting the afternoon of 3/13/20 to prevent hopefully either of us from getting sick or spreading the disease to others. We have since gone back more to “normal” starting in 2021 after vaccinations but are still not back to life 2019 style. I stopped blogging here for a while (as “Cooking in Isolation”) but I am in a home cooking rut and am back as of Feb 2023 in hopes to spark some interest in meals again.

In some ways, not much has changed since 2020. I am still uninterested in spreading Covid-19 or being why vulnerable people aren’t able to live their lives and safely do things like shop, go to doctor’s visits and pick up prescriptions or socialize. Our government has made it clear that their goal to have us work and spend money and that they are okay if that happens at the expense of public health. That is not okay.

While we are luckily healthy, we are concerned for other members of society who may not be so fortunate. They deserve to be able to safely live in our community.

We don’t value our health and entertainment over others and chose to live in a way that is more inclusive and thoughtful for others during an ongoing public health crisis. Over 400 people are still dying every day. Millions more are disabled or out of work. Excess deaths are still very high.

Why would we want to contribute to any of that if we can do something as simple as get take out instead of eating in a restaurant? Or wear mask when we are in public? It takes nothing away from my day yet may prevent someone else from being seriously ill.

Our lives aren’t limited in any significant way, we are socializing, shopping, taking classes, working, we’ve gone on vacation. Getting take out and bringing it home or eating outside works just fine for times when we can’t cook or don’t want to. I don’t need someone to serve me.

This means we’ve been doing more home cooking and entertaining ourselves more at home than we did for many years.
