Day 1523: Knockwurst

It was sunny this morning so we went to Annapolis for their big plant sale at the Paca House. We had a lot of luck and got 9 pretty big plants for $70. We picked up cinnamon rolls at the Amish Market on the way back and then wraps at a Greek place in Canton for lunch.

Matt planted about half the plants before it started to rain again. It’s oddly chilly for May!

For dinner we had knockwurst with the sides we randomly/accidentally got with our crab cake order earlier in the week. Easy-peasy!

I heard nothing from my father or the rehab so I’m assuming everything is fine. I’ll go tomorrow and drop off the paperwork they wanted and see if I can leave his hearing aids there to charge so I don’t have to keep switching them out. Fingers crossed he is there for a couple of weeks!

Day 1522: Spaghetti

My dad moved to rehab today! Matt dropped off the clothes I picked up at his house this afternoon. I really think they know when I am driving, someone’s at the door or I’m on another call etc and call then.

For lunch we got sandwiches at the Italian store and some other ingredients.

For dinner we had the leftover spaghetti and meatballs and fresh garlic bread.

Dottie was super cute today! Very ‘70s.

Day 1521: Turkey

My dad called this morning and told me not to come because he was being evaluated by physical therapy today. Now we are waiting for a rehab placement!

For lunch we had tuna again and for dinner we had the leftover potatoes and broccoli from earlier in the week and I made a boneless turkey breast.

I was going to go to a crochet thing at the library but of course as I was getting ready my dad and his doctor called.

Day 1520: Crab Cakes

I didn’t go to the hospital today because it seemed likely he was being transferred but then I didn’t hear any updates. I did get a call from a woman who enrolled him in a program to get a grant to help pay for some expensive medications. I had her read me all the info which was good because she said she’d send me an email with the details and never did. She kept saying my dad has a paper copy but he has no place to put anything in his room and who knows if he’d remember? The only place to put anything is the same tray they use to serve his meals. He didn’t call either so I guess nothing is going on. I really didn’t feel well today after my massive migraine last night. That was one of the worst ones in a very long time.

For lunch Matt made tuna and then later we tried some take out from a local seafood place. It’s where they bulk make crab cakes for mail order and they have a little take out area. It was pretty good. They also gave us some coleslaw and macaroni salad we didn’t order so we have that leftover. The crab deviled eggs were really good if a little pricey.

I did finish making a crochet jellyfish! It was the April subscription kit.

Day 1519: Spaghetti

Long day! My dad called right as I woke up asking to switch out his hearing aid and telling me I needed to come right then so I rushed over and they told me that it wasn’t visiting hours yet—he had been moved and no one told me. Luckily security talked to his nurse and let me up.

He didn’t have the procedure yesterday but had it after I left. They had been asking him about having local family and neighbors again but I reiterated to the doctor when they called with his results that he needs to go to acute rehab. We can’t live there, he can’t live here and his neighbors are elderly. I don’t think they are explaining to him what “help at home” would look like—he’s been basically bedridden for weeks and barely walking around by himself.

His dog is doing well at the sitters. It is my secret dream they will love her so much they will want to keep her. I don’t know what to do when the two weeks are up.

After the hospital I drove to the suburbs to do his banking and then to Target to get some bins. World Market just opened up here so I stopped in and got a couple treats.

I organized a lot of yarn into those bins.

For lunch I had a can of soup and Matt had soup and a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

For dinner we got take out spaghetti and meatballs and salad even though it wasn’t the nightly special. We got extra meatballs so we can get another meal out it.

I had such a horrible migraine I had to lay in a dark room for hours.

Day 1518: Steak

I didn’t get an update about my dad today so I think I’ll go in person tomorrow. I didn’t go today because he was having a test/procedure done and they said he’d probably be sleeping and they’d call so I’ve been waiting here.

Matt had his own doctors appointment today and picked us up some tortas for lunch.

I did a little Little Free Library run and got rid of 2 1/2 bags of books. I’ve really been trying to clear our shelves. I have some books I’ve loved but haven’t actually read in 10+ years and some cookbooks we haven’t used that need to go!

Dinner was roasted potatoes, the steaks I bought last week and broccoli. It was good to have a real meal!

Day 1517: Popcorn

Things are not great! We did drop my dad’s dog off at the sitter and that went well! Hopefully that will work out.

We skipped lunch and tried to nap then got a big order from Kung Fu 12 szechuan and only a few bites in, I found trash in my pork. Like my father-in-law dying and my dad being in the hospital isn’t enough.

I just wanted to eat. On top of the big things, many little things keep going wrong and I’m exhausted.

I ended up eating a can of soup and some popcorn.

Day 1516: Doughnuts

I saw my dad this morning and he was doing great and they talked about him coming home and having physical therapy visit or to rehab early next week. He is still in overall poor cardiac health but can leave to go live alone soon.

I came home to have a celebratory doughnut and a sandwich and we got a call my FIL died. Not unexpected since he was in home hospice but he has been in hospice for several weeks and seemed relatively well.

Then my dad’s doctor called and said my dad is back in the ICU with a high heart rate that they aren’t having luck controlling. They finally got it under control a few hours later. I don’t know what this means for the plans we made.

Too much going on. At least we found a pet sitter for my dad’s dog and we can drop her off tomorrow. My mother-in-law is handling her husband’s affairs so that’s something. I had to handle my mom’s and it was a lot. It would have been so much worse if she wasn’t local.

For dinner I just had a marshmallow doughnut and mi goreng with cabbage.

The only good things of the day is my new tape loom arrived and my dad and his doctor agreed the invasive device/procedure wasn’t a good idea.

Day 1515: Sushi

Matt took off today for a bit of a reset and to mow the lawn since next week looks very rainy.

For lunch I had soup and he made noodles and cottage cheese.

We tried to re-order the grill from ACE but apparently the location less than five miles away won’t deliver. I think we are giving up.

Matt saw my dad briefly and dropped off his hearing aid. I have a meeting with him and his care team tomorrow about options. I don’t think the surgical one he seems to qualify for will actually be a good fit. It involves a device, open heart surgery and a ton of recovery time.

For dinner we splurged on sushi.

Day 1514: Pasta

I really am exhausted. Lulu was coughing last night and around 4 am remembered we had some leftover cough meds from Feb because they had given us too many pills at the vet. That helped so I’m going to try it again. We missed the window to call for an appointment today. She’s really only coughing at night and in the morning not when she’s sleeping during the day and has been very puppyish lately so who knows what it is?

I spent the morning at the hospital and then we had club sandwiches for lunch.

For dinner we made pasta and the meat sauce I bought at the Italian grocery on Tuesday. Every day is a blur.

I really can’t find a sitter for his dog and neither of the possible ways going further are going to be quick or allow him to take full care of the dog. What we are doing now is not sustainable long term. It’s really hard to get someone to take a dog that can’t be around other dogs or children.
