Day 1391: New Year’s Eve

We are holding our annual themed NYE/NYD movie marathon. This year the theme is school and we watched Teen Witch, Heaven Help Us, MAD and Fast Times at Ridgemont High.

Made a vat of chili and cinnamon rolls for lunch then recreated my childhood school lunches of crackers, meat, cheese, deviled eggs with carrot and celery sticks with dip.

More cupcakes.

Lots of fun! No game today but we made friendship bracelets.

Day 1390: Cupcakes!

Today was mostly prep for tomorrow and Monday. As planned we didn’t make meals for today but made cinnamon roll dough, pizza dough and hard boiled eggs.

For lunch we got sandwiches from a different Italian deli since Matt passed it on his way back from picking up cupcakes. Their sandwiches are pretty good but there is always something a little missing. Mine was rosemary ham, mozz and pesto but really needed some olives or peppers. I added some olive spread we had from our preferred deli and it was better.

For dinner we picked up from the sushi place with the salad style California rolls. The last time we went there the raw rolls were kind of fishy in a bad way but we thought maybe it was a fluke.

It was not a fluke but at least the California rolls and seaweed salad was good? I’m sad to avoid another take out place. It was never fantastic (beyond their weirdly good California rolls) but their sushi was fine and affordable.

We did get cupcakes for tomorrow but had a really good lemon chiffon cupcake tonight. Tart!

Day 1388: Leftovers Extravaganza

For lunch we had leftover Chinese food. Well, sort of leftover, we bought Singapore noodles with the idea we’d have it for lunch but didn’t eat any last night.

For dinner we heated up the last bits of Christmas food—rolls, sausage rolls, cod cakes, gratin potatoes and sautéed up some fresh spinach.

In the morning I went to Aldi and Giant and got all the food for NYE. It’s an easy theme this year food-wise and we might just buy dessert because we are baking three of the mains.

Day 1387: Cake!

For lunch we had leftover sausage rolls

For dinner we ended up getting Chinese takeout from the place near us.

Finished the cake! It was the peppermint bark one from Milk Bar and it was fine but I actually liked the mint chocolate chip cookie one better. It really tasted like a candy cane, which is fine but I was expecting a little more mint. The cake was supposed to be chocolate-mint but wasn’t very minty.

Day 1386: Boxing Day

I wish Boxing Day was more of a thing here! Why don’t we get fun Christmas specials of our favorite shows either?

Matt had to work but it’s an at home week for the holidays and it was slow. He made us scrambled eggs and ham for lunch with English muffins.

For dinner I made a pork loin and heated up the leftover cabbage and potato gratin. Leftover cake for dessert!

Day 1385: Christmas!

Today was successful! Matt liked what he got (mostly knitting related and a language course) and I got a sterling silver macaroni necklace and rug hooking and knitting stuff.

We had our big meal at lunchtime which always works out best! We had potato leek gratin, rolls, ham and red cabbage.

We had a Milk Bar peppermint cake for a snack and then ham sandwiches and Doritos for dinner.

Watched The Muppet Christmas Carol and the new Doctor Who special.

Day 1384: Cod Cakes

We had pancakes for breakfast and then U.K. style shrimp cocktail for a snack.

We watched Emmet Otter’s Jug-Band Christmas which we hadn’t seen before and it was cute! They even had a scene of spinning yarn and knitting!

For dinner we made cod cakes with watercress and leeks and sausage rolls. The sausage rolls were a bit of an adventure, they really released a lot of liquid. We used some meatloaf mix instead of pork so maybe that was it? We had to switch them on to a different pan half way through baking.

We watched the Poirot episode where it’s Christmas and he finds the ruby and taught me how to cut up a mango and an old, good Midsomer Murder that took place at Christmas time.

Matt made dough for the rolls tomorrow so hopefully they will rise a little bit in the fridge overnight.

Day 1382: Turkey Pot Pie

Lots of beige food today! I made turkey pot pie for lunch with biscuits on top which was a bit of a mess. The dogs were going nuts and I forgot to put the green beans in.

It was tasty though and we added some green beans to the leftovers for tomorrow.

For dinner Matt made some dish with leftover broccoli mashed potatoes and we had some herby German sausages and mushrooms/onions.

Lots of ugly beige food!

I tried out Harris Teeter delivery and was able to get the refrigerated puff pastry! Finally!
