Day 1259: Leftovers

I went to get my flu shot this morning and mailed out a return.

The pharmacist was masked today! I still see a fair amount of masked people in stores but there has been an uptick lately which is nice to see.

My plan was to get groceries after but I realized I have enough to eke through some days since we did a go to some farm stands this week and I have some odds and ends I can use.

I tried to do a Target pick up for soda, Haribo and some odds and ends but they didn’t have 3/4 of what I wanted in stock yet charged me for them and are sending me one item. They refunded part of it when I canceled the single bag of candy they did have in stock but not the rest.

Ulta also doesn’t seem to have much in stock at the store or online—I wanted some lip stuff and my free birthday gift and nothing I wanted was available. I keep finding this everywhere. It’s odd I don’t see people mentioning these issues online much.

I came home and made us some BLTs for lunch to use up the leftover bacon, lettuce and tomatoes we had. Fancy popcorn on the side.

Had some birthday chocolates.

Heated up the leftover takeout from Saturday. Watched some Bäckström.

Day 1258: Tomato Danish

We decided to end our staycation as we started it—at the beach. We picked up breakfast at the same bakery (this time I got a tomato basil danish and Matt got a breakfast sandwich but with scrambled eggs, not sunny side up) and hung out there for a while playing a game and reading. trying to play a game anyway. I can’t tell if the instructions are missing something or if they are slightly out of order. They are worded specifically yet oddly.

Then we visited a new yarn shop (didn’t buy anything) and came home. It was really nice at the beach but humid back home.

Matt made us crab cakes using leftover crab he picked yesterday when we had steamed crabs, I sliced up a tomato and we had the shrimp pasta salad we bought yesterday in case the crabs weren’t enough and didn’t end up eating.

Day 1257: Crabs!

Today was my birthday! I tried to make it easy and get crabs and cupcakes but the bakery wouldn’t let us reserve cupcakes because they were having a fundraiser and all the crab place had were smaller crabs. The little crabs were good and the cupcakes worked out (the blackberry cheesecake ones were really tasty!) but it was unexpectedly stressful because for a while there it looked like we weren’t getting either.

It was a gorgeous day out but our neighbors spent the day doing wood chipping so it was so loud in the yard while we were trying to eat. They finally stopped for a bit in the afternoon so we went out to play a board game and they started again. Doesn’t anyone else want to enjoy their yards and the weather? When do you get a low humidity, 82° day in August in Baltimore?

It’s exhausting because we aren’t dining indoors at restaurants for obvious reasons so I was excited to have great weather to eat outside and relax instead of being indoors all the time. Instead I got a migraine from the noise and had to spend the afternoon in a dark room.

For dinner we got some fancy sushi.

At least the rest of the week was successful?! We have one more day left then it’s back to work. Fingers crossed that goes well.

Today wasn’t horrible but it really wasn’t the chill, fun, easy day we had planned.

Day 1256: Bangun Bharta

This morning was dramatic because I left to go pick up a loom bench in Western Maryland and a not long later Matt left with two of the dogs to take them to the vet. He had his car keys but locked himself out of the house. I was already at the highway and had to meet the seller in an hour. The idea had been for him to take the dogs to the vet, drop them off and then pick up the candy for my birthday tomorrow across town while I was doing the long drive to pick up the bench and back. He ended up having to take the dogs and then kill time until I got back to let him in the house. Lulu was really too sore to walk after her shots so going to the park wasn’t a great option. At least he didn’t have all three dogs! My dad has a key but apparently he forgot and timing-wise I don’t think that would have worked anyway.

It worked out and now I finally have a bench for my looms! Hopefully it will be better than the chair I’ve been using.

I was going to pick up lunch on my way back but I didn’t want to add to my already long drive so we ended up having hot dogs and popcorn because that’s all we had readily available.

Then for dinner we got take out bangun bharta and chana masala. Lots of leftovers for another dinner.

Day 1255: Steaks

We went to the conservatory today. We rarely go in the summer and a bunch of things had bloomed we haven’t seen in bloom before!

We picked up fancy fries from the fry place. Then we napped and I repotted the plant I got at the conservatory. They had a lot of orchids for sale but I can’t take on any more orchids!

For dinner Matt tried out a new fancy thermometer to make steaks but they were fine inside but the texture wasn’t great. Maybe it will be better with bigger cuts of meat? We also had corn on the cob and the rest of the pickle rye.

Tomorrow we have a bunch of appointments and errands in the morning so not really looking forward to that! But it made sense to get them done while we are off.

Day 1254: Tuna BLT

Today we went to Harpers Ferry, WV. It was a gorgeous day! We walked around a bit, went to the historic candy store there then drove out of the historic part to Bolivar Bread Bakery and got pretzel pepperoni rolls, a couple of cookies and a loaf of pickle rye bread.

Then we went to a yarn store and got some yarn and drove a few minutes more to Shepherdstown. It has a cute downtown area! Matt got a sandwich but I wasn’t hungry. I did get some more popcorn from a rival popcorn shop. We are swimming in popcorn!

We came home and had a pepperoni roll snack and tried some popcorn. I got “loaded potato” flavor from both shops and it was fun to see how different they were.

For dinner we made tuna salad BLTs on the pickle bread and it was so good.

Day 1253: Smith Island Cake

We got up early, made pancakes and went to York, Pa for the day.

We went to the Weightlifting Hall of Fame Museum which I have always seen a statue from 83 and was intrigued by. It was well done!

We also went to the popcorn place I went to back in April and picked up like five flavors of popcorn.

Then we went to an event at a yarn store with a yarn designer which was fun.

On our way back we stopped and got crab cakes and Smith Island Cake for dinner. Both were good!

Day 1252: Carbonara

My library is closed so we went to a different branch to return my books and then picked up Greek food for lunch.

We had a movie marathon of movies that have knitting scenes and Matt made carbonara which I don’t think I’ve actually had before. He started it with pancetta but it was too salty so he switched to regular bacon. It was really good! We also had green beans, for health.

We had a game to play but the day got away from us.

Day 1251: Cinnamon Bun!

We did a day trip today to our favorite beach on the Chesapeake Bay. On the way we stopped at a new bakery near there and got breakfast sandwiches (pretty good!) and some pastries to try.

I have been craving a cinnamon bun for ages. They aren’t popular at local bakeries and making my own is fun but yields way too much for the two of us. It was pretty good—the dough was more like an actual roll than what I’m used to on a cinnamon roll/bun and I think they make them individually rather than in a pan which yields a different side texture. But it had a good flavor and the icing was solid.

The place was pricy and packed but worth it if only to have a place to get breakfast on the way to the beach. We were so full from the sandwich we didn’t even get lunch and then snacked on baked goods at like 4pm. Normally we’d get lunch to go and then hit the beach but this way we got there earlier when it was cooler and less buggy. Not many places are open before 11 am so this really opened us up to beach going earlier and not having to pack a lot of food ourselves.

For dinner we tried a place we used to get take out from a lot years ago but was kind of blah. We noticed a lot of good, recent reviews for it so we figured it was worth a try. It’s right near where I do 90% of my errands so it would be a coup if we liked their food again (more?). It wasn’t bad! I wouldn’t go out of my way like some of the reviews said they did but I’d pick up a lunch special if I was in the neighborhood and hungry.

Watched Meurtres Au Mont-Saint-Michel and got so much reading (and some knitting) done at the beach.
