This morning I went to our favorite old school bakery to place an order for Matt’s birthday cake at the end of the month. I offered to bake but he said he wanted it to be low stress. A coconut layer cake was only $17 so you can’t beat that! His birthday is on Memorial Day this year and they are closed Sundays so I had to get it for a couple days early. Got a couple of doughnuts while I was there too! Somehow they didn’t melt when I was running errands.
I had it with some of the coffee Matt ordered me from Costco. Luckily I liked it because I think we have 10 lbs of it.

After the bakery I went to the library and Aldi. Grocery stores still aren’t “normal”. This time they had a lot of meat but the dairy was really hit and miss. Like they had plain yogurt but not flavored in the big containers, salted butter but not unsalted, hazelnut creamer but not caramel, low fat sour cream but not full fat. On the upside, produce was super cheap as things start to be back in season. Mushrooms were 99¢ and the baby cucumbers were $1.20. That’s less than half what they were a couple weeks ago.
Matt had physical therapy and picked us up sandwiches at the Italian market since I was shopping and we didn’t have anything here to eat. He got two different ones and we each had half of each and one tasted really bad! Like rotten peppers even though there were no peppers on it. He didn’t even notice it tasted like a beach trash can. Luckily he didn’t get sick but it was so gross! I don’t know how he didn’t notice. It makes me sad because it’s the only deli we have locally and now I’m a little off them. They aren’t cheap but normally they are so good, it’s worth it.
I spent most of the afternoon in the hammock reading and thinking about my weaving project. I don’t love love how it turned out and am not sure if I have time to redo it or make something else.
This afternoon I realized the back of my phone is completely smashed. I tripped coming in the house with the groceries and banged against the door with it in my pocket so maybe that did it? I thought the newer iPhones were supposed to be tougher. This one scratched really easily; I’ve never had a scratch on a phone before! It has never had good battery life and would randomly crash. It also has never been good to talk on; no one can ever hear or understand me. Can a phone be a lemon?
I went ahead and ordered a new one to pick up at the Apple Store and a case from Target. That is not money I wanted to spend today! But I think it will literally fall apart in my hand at any moment. I’ve never seen anything cracked that bad before!
I ran into some people on an online group I’m a long time member of who otherwise seem educated and smart who kept clinging to 2 year old Covid info and were unaware of the fallout of the ending of the state of emergency. I can’t imagine being that unaware and unconcerned about the world around me.
For dinner we made rice pilaf with mushrooms and asparagus and coho salmon. Easy peasy!
Matt had his piano lesson so I watched Saint X on Hulu a bit. I tried reading the book years ago when it came out but couldn’t get into it. The writing wasn’t great as I recall but the show isn’t bad. I remember thinking it was an interesting idea.
I got a fun PR package in the mail I can turn it a meal next week which is always good! I haven’t been responding to a lot of pitches since I was busy with the book but I have some more time now.
