Day 1082: Doughnuts

I had a quick appointment in the early morning so I stopped off at the bakery on my way back. I’m never there that early! I cannot resist a sugar twist or a chocolate raised. I was tempted by a pineapple upside down cake and king cake but I resisted.

For lunch I had some frozen crispy shrimp and the mashed potatoes leftover from last night. Matt went into work and had pizza. He got lucky and a coworker sat outside with him the drizzle for company.

For dinner I made some steelhead trout, bagged salad and we had some of the day old rolls I got at the bakery. They were still soft! I wanted some stale rolls for a recipe I might try tomorrow so hopefully they will dry out overnight.

We rewatched a Vera and worked on our knitting.

  1. Are neither of you vaccinated? Why does he sit outside in the rain to eat? I also noticed you said you still haven’t eaten in a restaurant. I understand why a couple years ago, but now? Still? Do you have special health problems or agoraphobia or something? I’ve literally never heard of anybody who hasn’t gone back to a restaurant at least once. I am and was in a full support of social distancing, etc. I am also double vaccinated and double boosted. Being cautious now isn’t a bad thing at all but I’m amazed you haven’t eaten out/in a restaurant at least once.

  2. We are both vaccinated of course! Obviously we are not agoraphobic as you are responding to a post about both of us leaving the home. We are luckily quite healthy.

Basically it comes down to how we are concerned for other members of society who may not be so fortunate. They deserve to be able to safely live in our community. I don’t need to be one more unmasked person for service workers or anyone trying to live their life to be around.

We don’t value our health and entertainment over others and chose to live in a way that is more inclusive and thoughtful for others during an ongoing public health crisis. Over 400 people are still dying every day. Millions more are disabled or out of work. Excess deaths are still very high.

Why would we want to contribute to any of that if we can do something as simple as eat a slice of pizza in a pavilion on a warm, drizzly day? Or wear mask when we are in public? It takes nothing away from my day yet may prevent someone else from being seriously ill.

Our lives aren’t limited in any significant way, we are socializing, shopping, taking classes, working, we’ve gone on vacation. It’s strange to think that eating in at a restaurant is some essential activity. Getting take out and bringing it home or eating outside works just fine for times when we can’t cook or don’t want to. I don’t need someone to serve me.

We actually know quite a few people who are doing the same thing and most people here are “still” masking in grocery stores/shops/public transit. A lot of local restaurants went to take out only and never went back. We are lucky to live in a place that values health and community like this.
