Today’s planned meal was beef stew with beef I defrosted and why I bought fancy bread yesterday but the package apparently had a hole in it and leaked all over the fridge and dried out. I didn’t even particularly feel like stew but I want to put off going grocery shopping because the week after this is going to be busy and I want to get groceries as late in the week as possible.
We had some spice mix to make chili chicken but we’ve had a string of just okay meals so Matt decided last night to marinate some mochiko chicken because we had all of the ingredients and it was a surefire successful recipe. We haven’t made it in a long time!
This morning he made buttermilk pancakes (perfected during the early days of the pandemic–the trick is to add some sourdough discard or a sprinkle of yeast to the batter and let it sit for a minute) and bacon. The problem with pancakes is that we never want lunch after so we had a snack of chips and guacamole but no real lunch.
We got up super early with new dog Dottie (7:30!) who hasn’t gotten the memo that all dogs and people sleep in on the weekends so the day felt really long. I read all of Maame. I started a bracelet from the knot a day book I’m working through but it was so long it kept getting tangled and I gave up. I highlighted all the gross passages in the worst book I’ve read so far this year so they appear on Goodreads with my review. Matt did laundry. The dogs napped, lucky them.
We played HMS Dolores and cribbage. I had bought HMS Dolores for our themed NYE (movies and food named after people) but we didn’t get to it so it was good to finally play it. It was oddly basically rock paper scissors but with cards but cute and quick.

We played a lot of the app Cribbage with Grandpa during the early days of the pandemic (noticing a theme here) and off and on since then and I got Matt a cribbage board for Christmas/Hanukkah and we finally got up the nerve to try it out. There are so many ways to score! Is cribbage popular in the midwest? When I look it up, I see a lot of cribbage boards shaped like Minnesota.
We watched an old Danny Kaye movie (Netflix DVD) where he was a ventriloquist and it was very slow and not as funny as the rave reviews made it seem it would be.
Vera is back so we watched that too. Very lazy Sunday except for making pancakes and then the chicken, sweet and sour cabbage, and rice for dinner. I’m glad I randomly picked up some chicken Friday and we had about 3/4 of a cabbage leftover from a couple weeks ago that was still good. No idea what we are eating tomorrow. Tuesday we will probably have the chicken again but I want to put off shopping until Thursday if I can.
My goal today was to drop off a return at UPS or a drop-off point but then I realized it wouldn’t be picked up until tomorrow and it’s a huge box. I had ordered Matt a game for Valentine’s Day and they sent me the wrong one! They also sent it in one of those eco-friendly boxes I like but you can’t reuse them so I had to put in a box that the dogs’ food came in since it was recycling last week.
